About Us -> About the Center pdf

The Pediatric Cardiac Center at Children’s Hospital and Research Center at Oakland provides a complete range of diagnostic, therapeutic, interventional, surgical and follow-up services for children with all types of congenital heart disease.

The Pediatric Cardiac Center is lead by eight cardiologists and three pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons with support from a dedicated, specially trained team including a social worker, clinical nurse specialist, nurse clinician, technicians and office staff. The team meets regularly to ensure the highest standard of patient care.

Through programs in our hospital and at numerous satellite clinics, our physicians and clinical professionals offer superior, round-the-clock care addressing the special needs of patients and their families. For the convenience of our patients, Children’s Hospital and Research Center at Oakland operates satellite clinics in Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, Sonora, Brentwood, Modesto and Larkspur. In addition, the Center operates an Adult Congenital Heart Diesease Clinic in Berkeley.

The Pediatric Cardiac Center offers a wide range of support services to help children and their families cope with the social and emotional impact of heart disease. A cardiology social worker, an outpatient cardiology nurse, and a team of clinical nurse specialists provide counseling and information about the care of children with heart disease, help prepare you and your child for any hospitalizations, procedures, or surgeries, and are available for outpatient consultations, counseling and phone advice.

Parents are educated about community resources and receive practical advice on day-to-day needs and concerns. Teams of volunteers, many of whom have congenital heart conditions themselves, offer their knowledge and emotional support.. In addition, quarterly discussion groups called “Parents for Heart” feature speakers who cover a wide range of practical topics such as “Care and Feeding of Children With Heart Disease” and “The Impact of Childhood Illness on the Family.”

Children’s Hospital and Research Center at Oakland is one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals. We offer resident cardiology electives and in-hospital resident and nursing educational rotations. The members of the Cardiac Center team are respected members of the pediatric cardiology community.
